I was curious to see what percentage of income the average American spent on gasoline compared with 10, 20, and 30 years ago. Thanks to the U.S. Census Bureau, I learned that the median household income in 1978 was $15,064. In 1988, it was $27,225. And in 1998, it was $38,885. The latest figures for medium household income are from 2006, but considering that no one seems to be getting raises ...
